Elementary Sacrament Information
Parents play a vital role in the preparation of their children for the celebration of the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion. In addition to their weekly C.C.E. classes, children in the second grade or above will have the option of entering our sacramental preparation program. Parents are required to attend an initial meeting for each sacrament. At that time, you will receive a calendar of preparation meeting dates.
A $20 fee will be collected at each of these meetings to cover the cost of books and materials. Requirements to enter the sacramental program are:
· The child must be in the second grade or above.
· The child must be baptized. **
· The child must have attended one previous year of Faith Formation. ( C.C.E or Catholic School)
· The child must be currently enrolled in C.C.E or Catholic School with 75% attendance or greater.
· Parents are willing to attend meetings and assist their child in the preparation process.
* The family has made a commitment to attend Catholic Mass on Sunday.

Confirmation
“Preparation for Confirmation should aim at leading the Christian toward a more intimate union with Christ and a more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit – his action, his gifts, and his bidding – in order to be more capable of assuming the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life. To this end catechesis for Confirmation should strive to awaken a sense of belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ, the universal Church as well as the parish community. The latter bears special responsibility for the preparation of the confirmands.” (CCC #1309)
Just as all sacraments are an opportunity to encounter Christ, so the sacrament of Confirmation, celebrated here in our diocese during the adolescent years, is an opportunity for the youth of our parish to renew their baptismal call, receive the strengthening of the Holy Spirit in their lives, and be ready to more fully enter into their mission as active witnesses for Christ. Confirmation is not to be understood as a graduation from faith formation but as the next step in continuing lifelong spiritual growth. The diocesan guidelines state that the greatest fruit of the sacrament is realized in those who strive to live in faithful communion with Christ as an active member of the local Church.
Requirements for Confirmation at St Martha include the following:
· Candidate is in the tenth grade or above
· Candidate has been baptized
· Candidate has completed at least one year of catechesis prior to the direct preparation for the sacrament – this can be one year of LifeTeen or one year at a Catholic high school
A meeting for students and their parents will be held on Wednesday, September 8th @ 7:00 PM in the FLC. Students will then have the opportunity to sign up for direct preparation for Confirmation. During this year of preparation, students will be asked to:
· Complete an initial interview before classes begin
· Complete at least 12 hours of service
· Attend 14 mandatory Confirmation sessions (these will be held either Tuesday night from 7:15 – 8:30 or Wednesday night from 7:15 – 8:30) beginning in October.
· Research a saint of their choice and turn in a one page report by November
· Attend a retreat
· Complete a final interview before Confirmation
