C.C.E. PROGRAM

The Program uses RCL’s (Resources for Christian Living) “FAITH FIRST Legacy Edition” series. The Faith First curriculum is divided into three parts:  Doctrine, Scripture, and the Liturgical Seasons.  These three important elements of Catholic belief, God’s word, and liturgical celebration are interwoven throughout each grade level of Faith First.  They are also taught as separate strands in each grade.  This balanced approach ensures that children will come to know, love, and live the rich heritage of the faith we are proud to profess to Christ Jesus.

The doctrines taught in Faith First are drawn from the four pillars of faith as presented in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.  These important teachings are developmentally presented to help the children recognize that what we believe, how we worship, how we live, and how we pray make a difference in our lives.

Faith First is based on a firm foundation made up of three essential elements:

  1. The beliefs of a people as explained by the Catholic Church – the doctrines that have been passed down to us through the generations and are at this time gathered into the Catechism of the Catholic Church.  The Catechism is not a book for children, but the contents of it can be made accessible to children.
  1. The story of a people that has been passed down from generation to generation.  This story is first and foremost contained in the Bible.  But Faith First also shares the stories of saints and people of faith who have come before us and have shown us how to live as Christians.
  1. The celebration of a people as lived out in our liturgical year.  Each year, we as Catholic Christians relive the story of our salvation as we pass through the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Ordinary Time.  We celebrate the saints and the holy times that we share as a people.

The Faith First program provides a balance between doctrine, Scripture, and the liturgical year.  Each is given individual emphasis and is integrated into the whole.  These three themes are well developed on their own in the Faith First program.  One is not seen as less or more important than the others.  It is the balance that gives each the emphasis that it deserves in the faith education of children.  Then these three themes are woven throughout the program into the everyday life and experience of the children.

SACRAMENT PROGRAM

Parents play a vital role in the preparation of their children for the celebration of the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion. In addition to their weekly C.C.E. classes, children in the second grade or above will have the option of entering our sacramental preparation program. Parents are required to attend two meetings: One in the Fall to receive materials for First Reconciliation preparation and one in the Spring for First Communion. The first Sacrament Parent Meeting will be held the first week of November.

A $20 fee will be collected at each of these meetings to cover the cost of books and materials. Requirements to enter the sacramental program are:

·        The child must be in the second grade or above.

·        The child must be baptized. **

·        The child must have attended one year of Faith Formation.

·        The child must be regularly attending C.C.E. classes or enrolled in a    Catholic school.

·        The child must attend at least 75 % of their classes.

**If your child is in 2nd grade & has not been baptized, call Carla Lewton, 281-358-1959, x213 for questions about sacraments.

Students must be prepared for their First Reconciliation before entering the First Communion program. First Reconciliation is scheduled with a group prayer service on February 16, 2008

First Communion will be celebrated this year in the context of regularly scheduled weekend parish liturgies. In this way, the whole parish community will have the opportunity to celebrate with the communicants and their families. First Communion is scheduled on April 27, May 4, and May 11 in 2008.
